(I want to hear it read)
He remembered this tree like a friend. When he was young, just a kitten, he had ventured down from the cliff caves and would climb these giants till he found a perch high up. There he would rest in the cool branches. A calm would fill him as his eyes would grow heavy with a wish to sleep. Within moments he would often fall into an afternoon slumber.
In and out of sleep he began to notice that the trees were singing to each other like wind chimes blowing in the wind. It was how they talked. After many visits, he could understand their conversations. Images filled his mind as they talked with songs. Images of vast numbers of humans filled his thoughts. They lived in places with many smokestacks called, 'cities.' Wooden vessels with white wings glided over ocean waves. They landed on the shores of this land. He didn’t know what any of this was. But he noticed that when the trees sang it caused his spirit to feel a deep calm. So he returned often.
When he told his mother about the singing, she purred.
“Yes,” she had said. “They are talking to you.”
Now his child was here with him in his favorite tree. In his tribe it was the mothers who instructed the sons and the fathers who guided their daughters in the mysteries of the trees. This kept the balance within each cat. Mother to son, father to daughter. He had come full circle.
The morning sun was dappling his face with shafts of bright light causing him to squint. He looked down into the sleeping face of his daughter. The warm breeze blew through the leaves. They were singing again. A deep peace filled him. He lifted his head and looked up into the endless radiating branches that seemed to pierce the blue sky above. These branches extended wide, covering even a part of the river.
Again the feeling of deep calm came to him. What those birds said could be true. Perhaps this being had somehow arranged the salvation of his daughter. He purred louder.
This was auspicious, he thought to himself. It was a sign. She was chosen. A bond was formed. The tree had somehow saved her life. In the cat clan when someone helps another, especially when that assistant saves a life, the one benefited returns the favor. This is how friendships are formed. This is how a family of cats form the bonds that make them strong.
She now had a life to give back to the tree, he thought to himself. He looked up into the branches. A life for a life.
He decided to allow her to stay in the arms of this one. The rock wall cave, their home, was only a short jump from the nest. He decided to let her stay where she was. She was safe here.
